2020--A New Vision

I think we all believed 2020 was going to be the year when everything fell into place.  This would be the year dreams would come true! This would be the year of "twenty-twenty vision!"

There was a different sense of excitement in the air that was somehow so much different than most of the years that came before. I was on board with this vision.  I absolutely believed 2020 was going to be my year of pure joy, travel, creativity, goal-smashing so, so much more.

Looks like 2020 had other ideas, as we all have discovered.

With the outbreak of COVID-19, our normal lives have pretty much been placed on hold until further notice.  Our cities and towns have been shut down.  Mandatory Stay-at-Home orders have been issued almost everywhere.  Schools are closed.  College campuses, once teeming with life and conversation, now silent and vacant.  Eerily vacant.

While we are all confident that we are going to get through this, it doesn't change the fact that many people are experiencing a sense of fear and anxiety due to the abrupt loss of normal life.  Routine has been lost. People have been laid off from their jobs.  Many do not know how they are going to pay their mortgages, their rent, their utilities.  This is all because of an evil, invisible force called COVID-19.  How could something so small and so invisible cause so much chaos, confusion and despair?

For the first few weeks, I felt the fear and the anxiety.  I didn't understand.  I didn't originally see the beautiful opportunity provided to me through this circumstance.  Even though the reality of COVID-19 is dangerous, there is also another reality which I feel God has revealed to me through all of this.

The reality is that we haven't really, truly stopped.

We haven't stopped thinking, analyzing, controlling, plotting, planning, strategizing, working, laboring, striving, climbing, maneuvering, jockeying, fortifying...

Where is the PAUSE button? Better yet, where is the STOP button?

We have become slaves to our jobs, our positions, our work, our time, our bosses, our colleagues, our screens.  Most of us just go, go, go until we can't go anymore.

Now we have literally been forced to stop.  Now what?

Maybe this is the time for you to stop and think about what you've been doing for the past ten years in the same call center job, dreaming about writing your book.
Maybe this is the time to stop running from your feelings and start confronting the damage of your past so you can finally heal.
Maybe this is the time for you to actually tell that person how you really feel and stop suppressing it.
Maybe this is the time to stop being what everyone else wants you to be and to ask yourself..."Who do you want to be?" Or, better yet, "Who is God calling you to be?"

We are alive for such a time as this, and the reality is COVID-19 didn't take away our "Twenty-Twenty Vision." No.  It granted us an entirely new vision.

Downtown Asheville Photo Story Reflection

Downtown Asheville is full of diversity, creativity, and individuality at every corner.   Almost instantly, upon getting out of my car at the Grove Arcade, I saw some unique street corner shops that I wanted to investigate.         I spoke with a woman named Rikki who sold these really cool habitats in jars called “Terraniums.”   They were the cutest little decorations.   I also ran into a couple with an overly curious and easily distracted pug named Brutus.   Finally, I stumbled upon a couple sitting on the ground just painting for fun.   Each person was happy to help with my project and enjoyed the company.      This being my first photojournalism project, I felt like I actually captured some great moments.   There were so many stories to be found downtown just by walking around and talking to people. Photojournalism is unique ...
