Downtown Asheville is full of diversity,
creativity, and individuality at every corner.
Almost instantly, upon getting out of my car at the Grove Arcade, I saw
some unique street corner shops that I wanted to investigate.
I spoke
with a woman named Rikki who sold these really cool habitats in jars called
“Terraniums.” They were the cutest
little decorations. I also ran into a
couple with an overly curious and easily distracted pug named Brutus. Finally, I stumbled upon a couple sitting on
the ground just painting for fun. Each
person was happy to help with my project and enjoyed the company.
This
being my first photojournalism project, I felt like I actually captured some
great moments. There were so many
stories to be found downtown just by walking around and talking to people. Photojournalism
is unique because you are capturing someone’s story right there on the
spot. Telling a story through pictures
literally brings the story to life, and captures that specific moment forever.
The people were really cool about being
photographed. None of them had a problem
with it, and they each reacted very naturally.
They were very personable and happy to have a friendly conversation
while I was photographing them. Each and every person I talked to was
intriguing, unique, and seemed to come from unique walks of life. I wanted to learn more about each of them,
and I think that was the most exciting part about the project. Every single person had a story to tell, just
by existing and doing everyday things.
Next
time I will go out in the field earlier in the day, just to have more
time. Also, I think I can improve on my
photo techniques by trying out different angles for my photographs.
